Exhibition – Forum Norwich – 15 & 16 October 2026

Norwich exhibition showcases the world through the eyes of young photographers in rural Uganda

A photography exhibition at The Forum, Norwich, on 15 and 16 October will offer visitors a unique insight into life in rural Uganda, captured through the eyes of young people taking part in free photography and storytelling workshops run by local charity Fotograf.

Visitors will have the opportunity to discover a collection of photographs created by young people living in rural communities in Uganda, offering an intimate and often surprising glimpse into their everyday lives, families, culture and surroundings.

The exhibition celebrates the creativity and perspectives of young people who are learning to tell their own stories through photography, helping them develop practical skills, build confidence and see the world around them in new ways.

Fotograf was founded by Lowestoft photographer Julian Claxton, who has spent more than a decade returning to Uganda to deliver free photography and storytelling workshops for disadvantaged children and young people.

Julian’s journey began following a 5,500-mile cycle ride from Suffolk to Rwanda in 2012, during which he was inspired by the people and communities he encountered. Since then, he has returned to work alongside rural communities, sharing his passion for photography and giving young people opportunities to express themselves creatively.

Through the workshops, participants learn how to use cameras, explore visual storytelling and document the people, places and experiences that matter to them. The project also makes use of recycled and donated photographic equipment, helping provide access to creative opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

Julian Claxton, founder of Fotograf, said:

“Photography is a wonderful way of helping young people express themselves and share their stories with the world. These workshops are about much more than taking pictures; they give young people the opportunity to explore their creativity, develop new skills and show others what life is like in their communities.

“The photographs offer a genuine insight into their lives, seen through their own eyes, and I’m delighted to be able to share their work with audiences in Norwich.”

The exhibition at The Forum will provide an opportunity for visitors to engage with the images, discover the stories behind them and learn more about Fotograf’s ongoing work in Uganda.

As a small charity based in Lowestoft, Fotograf relies on support, donations and partnerships to continue delivering its workshops and providing young people with access to photography and creative learning.
